Colleen:
[0:02] Hi, my name is Colleen, and I'm a peer educator here at TCNJ.
[0:09] [music]
[0:06]
Colleen:
My fellow peer educators include Ron, Jasmina, Linda N., Scott, Rhea, Davey, Elan, and Jenna.
[0:22]
Woman 1:
We're part of a campus group called S.A.V.E.
[0:24]
Woman 2:
That stands for Student Anti-Violence Educators.
[0:28]
Woman 3:
It's about friends positively influencing friends.
[0:33]
Man 1:
We focus on raising awareness about sexual assault, domestic violence, and stalking.
[0:39]
Man 2:
Our goal is to create a supportive and an active and a positive community on the TCNJ campus.
[0:46]
Colleen:
We work for the Office of Anti-Violence Initiatives located in Eickhoff Suite 159.
[0:52]
Man 1:
We currently offer four programs, Be Your Own Woman, What Men Can Do, Bystander Intervention, and Genderbending, and we're in the process of developing two new programs, a program on healthy relationships and a program on stalking.
[1:07]
Man 3:
If you're interested in getting a peer educator involved with your organization on campus, please visit Eickhoff 159 or visit our website.
[1:18] [music]
[1:23]
Colleen:
We're the peer educators and we do a lot of programs on campus, some of them about sexual assault, domestic violence, and stalking. Today's program is about sexual assault. It's called Be Your Own Woman. Thank you, Will, for having us.
[1:39] Raise your hand if you ever turned down a fun opportunity because "only men do that sort of thing".
[1:46]
Woman 4:
You're sitting straight across from each other, your legs are crossed.
[1:53]
Woman 5:
Raise your hand if you've changed your personality out of fear you would intimidate men.
[2:02]
Woman 2:
What society thinks is in the box, and this is what they expect us to do, should be, and this is what's outside of the box.
[2:11] [music]
[2:14]
Woman 5:
We're going to get you guys to stand up, we're going to get the blood pumping.
[2:18]
Man 1:
So now, we have another scenario. So you're hanging out with your friends, and someone says, "Oh, that's so gay!" Do you say something about it, or do you let it slide?
[2:26] When someone says, "That's so gay, " what are synonyms, what are they really saying when they're saying "That's so gay."
[2:31] What if someone, instead of saying "stupid", they said "That's so black, " "That's so Catholic, " "That's so Jewish, " how would you guys feel about that?
[2:36]
Man 4:
Ghetto.
[2:37]
Man 1:
Yeah, "so ghetto", so anything.
[2:38]
Man 2:
A party scene is a very typical place that you could possibly want to intervene.
[2:45]
Woman 3:
Totally tapped the keg, here!
[2:47]
Man 3:
I don't know.
[2:48]
Woman 3:
Take it! Just take it!
[2:52]
Colleen:
Hey!
[2:53]
Woman 3:
Hey, what's up?
[2:54]
Colleen:
Hi, what's going on? Are you OK?
[2:57]
Man 3:
Colleen comes in, she steps right in between them. And we call this?
[3:02]
Woman 3:
The banana split.
[3:03]
Man 3:
The banana split.
[3:04] [music]
[3:08]
Man 1:
The idea of this program is to increase communication between genders.
[3:12]
Woman 3:
First I'd like to hear from you all, what do you like best about being a woman?
[3:15]
Woman 6:
Sexiness.
[3:16]
Woman 7:
My sexiness!
[3:16]
Woman 1:
Sexiness. We love PMS, of course. Yes. We like being mothers, and we like our right to control men.
[3:24]
Woman 3:
Ability to control my sexual desire.
[3:27]
Man 3:
What guys like most about being guys. Let's start.
[3:30]
Man 2:
Peeing standing.
[3:30]
Man 3:
Of course.
[3:31] [laughter]
[3:32]
Man 3:
Not having babies. Weight doesn't matter.
[3:36] [laughter]
[3:39]
Woman 1:
Let's move on to what we like best about men. Chivalry?
[3:44]
Woman 8:
Yeah. If they have it, if they do it.
[3:47]
Woman 9:
They make things less complicated, like they're like, "It's not that serious."
[3:51] [music]
[3:59]
Woman 1:
What do we like least about being women?
[4:01]
Group:
Periods!
[4:02]
Woman 1:
We least like shaving, childbirth, the fact that we make less money than men.
[4:08]
Woman 8:
The lie that we are the weaker sex.
[4:11]
Woman 9:
It is a lie. We still have to be professionals, and still be mothers, and still do this, and that.
[4:17]
Woman 1:
What are some words for sexually active males?
Group:
Player.
[4:20]
Woman 1:
Player, they're all positive. The words for women are all negative. Those stereotypes definitely come into play.
